Tips to manage  money

Facing financial challenges can be tough, but there are ways to make it more manageable.

How you navigate your spending will depend on your unique situation. While not all tips may fit your needs, trying a few could make a positive difference.

Dealing with Money Worries - the basics

Be kind to yourself

Money worries can have a big impact on our mental health, making us feel concerned, embarrassed or angry. And they can affect self-esteem. Try not to blame yourself for your situation or how you're feeling about it.

Avoid comparisons

Try to avoid comparing yourself with others, whether on social media or in real life. These comparisons often aren’t real and can make us feel bad about ourselves. It may help to take breaks from social media and focus on your own journey.

Make a plan

Writing things down can make them feel more manageable or help you think more clearly. Having bills in a calendar can also help you prepare and also make calls to companies and ask for extensions so that you aren't paying additional late fees and interest. Financial counsellors can assist with making a plan and suggest other supports.

Consider the snowball method of paying off debt.

This involves starting with your smallest balance first, paying that off and then rolling that same payment towards the next smallest balance as you work your way up to the largest balance. This method can help you build momentum as each balance is paid off.

Be open with others

It can be hard to talk about money, but being honest with others can help. You may be able to agree ways to make events like birthdays plans free or low cost. Or they might be able to offer other kinds of support.
